Solar Project Engineer

Job Description
  • Undertake energy production assessments which include site visits, solar data processing and quality checking, correlation analysis, review of energy losses, statistical analysis and reporting;
  • Undertake site conditions assessments which include elements of the above;
  • Produce detailed reports which review the feasibility of sites for development which will include feasibility studies, layout optimization, shadow assessment, and visual impact assessment;
  • Analyze interconnection due diligence materials to support project acquisition efforts;
  • Liaise/Interface with a wide range of stakeholders from solar developers / Governmental bodies to financial institutions;
  • Lead and assist internal groups to complete deliverables required by outside agencies to construct interconnection facilities;
  • Manage multiple projects to ensure they are completed within timescale and budget;
  • Produce written reports and other documentation for delivery to the Development team;
  • Participate in R&D projects and supporting continuous improvement of procedures;
Qualifications
  • Degree in an Engineering, Physics, Atmospheric Science or Mathematics field;
  • Minimum of (1) year professional experience in a similar role in solar PV energy, renewable project development and transmission planning, preferably with international solar PV project developers and/or solar EPC service providers;
  • Knowledge in solar PV energy industry software (i.e. PVSyst, PVPlanner, Solar PV Autocad), tools for statistical analysis of data (Access, SQL) and measurement techniques would be a plus;
  • Good organizational and effective time management skills;
  • Ability to work in a fast-moving environment – operating to very tight timescales;
  • Strong attention to detail in order to produce accurate and high-quality reports for MGEN needs;
  • Adaptability and ability to cope with a wide variety of tasks;
  • Fluency in English; Chinese language would be a plus;
  • Ability to produce clear written reports and communicate verbally in English;
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills (both oral and written);
  • Good IT skills, and experience using MS Office suite packages

Solar Engineering Manager

  • Evaluate project feasibility including site visits and due diligence;
  • Develop electrical/structural designs for large scale solar projects;
  • Review and validate technical documents, including electrical single-line, wiring diagrams, schematics, electrical, structural, site plan drawings, and O&M manuals;
  • Identify, evaluate and direct subcontractor and consultant project services and deliverables;
  • Establish procedures for development of site permitting and interconnection requirements;

Trading Analyst

  • Manage power supply agreement – validate hourly generation of power plants base on metered quantities; monitor hourly WESM prices; validate power billing as provided by the power supplier and make recommendations to the Trading Manager; calculate energy revenues from WESM based on metered quantities of the power supplier and hourly WESM prices;
  • Manage contestable customers – nominate and declare bilateral contract quantities based on the hourly metered quantities of the contestable customers; prepare the power bill to be served to the contestable customers based on the agreed contract price and declared bilateral contract quantity; provide other customer services tasks as assigned by the Trading Manager;
  • Responsible for the planning and performing quantitative analysis to price wholesale energy commodity transactions and quantify and hedge risk;
  • Plan and optimize seasonal, monthly, balance-of-month, and daily resource commitment schedules and portfolio positions to provide the most economic operations of the power system generation portfolio;
  • Perform post-analysis of actual dispatch and system operations of the company’s portfolio to determine opportunities for efficiency improvements. Know and adhere to business rules and understand regulatory requirements;
  • Design and perform appropriate quantitative studies of historical and forecasted prices and system loads;
  • Conduct supply and demand analysis and supports trading and risk management activities;
  • Create and run modelling scenarios to optimize commitment, additional purchases and sales, as well as long term energy limited or constrained seasonal purchases;
  • Continuously seek improvements to processes and analyses used for purchasing and selling commodities, scheduling of contracted resources and commitment and dispatch of generation assets;
  • Analyze and forecast future market prices at various trading points;
  • Research energy market trends, maintains awareness of energy optimization techniques and tools to support trading contributors;
  • Stay abreast of current issue of the industry and existing regulatory rules in the government and market;
  • Validate the billing data, pricing and provides recommendation to the Trading manager; and
  • Prepare the power bill to be serve to the customers

Commercial Planning Analyst

Electricity Market Forecasting

  • Develop and maintain dispatch optimization models, Monte-Carlo simulation models, and stochastic simulation tools using applicable software;
  • Forecast electricity prices and perform market simulation studies related to the electricity market;
  • Conduct short-term and long-term modeling and forecasting of variable margin of MGEN’s portfolio;
  • Conduct sensitivity analysis under constraints e.g., seasonal and diurnal load variance, renewable energy integration, transmission constraints, and reserve requirements;
  • Back-test models to ensure forecast integrity;
  • Gather information and maintain datasets related to the energy market; and
  • Identify effective trading strategies and other forms of derivatives in relation to WESM.

Commercial Reporting

  • Prepare regular reports showing WESM system performance and trading performance of MGEN’s portfolio; and
  • Prepare business performance and ad-hoc reports showing the evolution of the variable margin of MGEN’s portfolio.

Project Valuation Support

  • Provide market forecasts for project valuation and assessment

Commercial Market Strategy and Policy

  • Assist in development of contracting strategy through determination of optimal portfolio mix and monitor its execution (hedge positions)

Market Surveillance and Research Assessment

  • Monitor market developments and lead assessment on the business impact
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree of above in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial Operations, or others);
  • At least 3 years of experience in power trading team, energy/power economics, spot market operations, or energy planning;
  • Knowledge of WESM– Philippine electricity spot market operations and rules;

Energy Market Analyst

  • Responsible for programming and coding statistical software to run statistical and other quantitative models with the guidance and discretion of an in-house Statistician, external consultants, and/or management;
  • Conduct quantitative forecasting exercises to analyze electricity markets– primarily in the Philippines and Singapore and analyze historical data on fuel and other energy and commodity markets globally as determined by the needs of the business;
  • Develop/code standardized and automated programs to run quantitative models to study and forecast electricity, commodity, and other energy markets using MATLAB or compatible programming tools based on parameters and methodologies in coordination with the Statistician, external consultants, and/or management;
  • Develop, clean, and maintain datasets and databases;
  • Execute and modify quantitative models and run sensitivities;
  • Produce presentations data visualization, analyses, memos, reports, and other deliverables.
Qualifications
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Computational Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, or other related fields;
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following coding statistical software R, Python, or other similar programs;
  • Knowledge of statistical methodologies (e.g., time series, regression models, and variants thereof) preferred but not required;
  • Knowledge of machine learning methodologies preferred but not required;
  • Ability to learn new programming languages quickly;
    Preference to those with relevant work experience in financial, commodities, or power market forecasting; energy trading teams for power plants and/or experience in other aspects of the power section;
